The old man and his tree

The wooden sculptures of Kuzima Izakovich grace museums in Moscow and in the Altai republic. Yet the man who carved the wondrous faces out of trees lived in solitude, far away from the city, in a simple wooden house in the forest along the Katun river. Nature gave him all he needed.

One day, when I was collecting medicinal plants in the forest, I walked past an old wooden shack at the point of collapsing. To my surprise the dead tree chunks surrounding the old hut had faces. They looked sad. No wonder, the man who had created them was no longer around. The old shack happened to be the workshop of the famous woodcarver.
